All sessions can be tailored to you the audience below. Session times vary base on your need. Each session is at least 2 hours and can be up to tailored for longer timeframes or multiple sessions. Classroom sessions can be adjusted for class period.
Many educators and support staff have found themselves looking for ways to engage with students of all backgrounds and to promote racial and social justice in their schools. All school staff play a pivotal role in helping students learn about and feel affirmed in their identities, understand differences, and reduce biases. For more inclusive schools for all students, educators need awareness of how systemic and interpersonal racism, discrimination and hate appears in the school environment. It is also important educators have skills and resources to curate a welcoming learning environment for students. In this interactive session, educators will:
Session Goals:
As Minnesota school communities continue to become more diverse, educators must have the tools to engage cross culturally with students and families effectively. In this session educators will reflect on their early conversations and experiences discussing race and identity and learn about identity development. Educators will engage in strategies to create space in school to dialogue with students of different backgrounds and how to embrace all students identity.
Session Goals:
Whether it is a social media post, something said in the hallways, or a chant at a sporting event, schools across Minnesota continue to see an increase in hate and bias incidents. These incidents impact the students and families' sense of inclusion and connection to school.
Foundational knowledge about microaggressions and bias is critical for educators growth and development As equity focused leaders, it is essential the schools are able to prepare staff with tools to curate school spaces where all students' identities are welcomed. In this session, educators will learn how racism, hate, and bias shows up in schools and its impact on students and families. Educators will gain proactive culturally responsive strategies to uplift students diverse identities and address instances when they are harmed.
Session Goals:
In this session, we will be exploring the history and significance of Juneteenth, a holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. This session will provide an in-depth look at the events that led to the abolition of slavery and the impact that it had on the African American community particularly in Minnesota.
We will also hear from expert and community member Lee Jordan about the importance of Juneteenth in today's society and how it is celebrated. Mr. Jordan will share his perspectives and personal experiences, providing a deeper understanding of the holiday's meaning and relevance in the Twin Cities. Historical Minnesota Juneteenth artifacts will be on display for hands-on learning.
Additionally, we will showcase different ways to celebrate Juneteenth, including cultural events, parades, and educational opportunities that are held in Minneapolis and across the country.

Seventy years ago, the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision declared that racial segregation in schools was unconstitutional. However, the path to true integration was slow and met with significant resistance in many parts of the country. Every state has its unique story of how integration unfolded. This documentary explores the impact of school integration in Minnesota, beginning in 1971 with the pairing of Hale and Field Elementary Schools through a busing program. Through first-hand accounts from students, staff, and community members, the documentary provides an insightful look into the challenges and successes of this process and the lasting effects on the community."

Derek Francis has over 14 years of experience in education. As a school counselor at North High in Minneapolis, Derek was a part of a staff that supported students from the lowest graduation rate in the district to a 39% increase in two years.
After navigating several major racial incidents in schools, Derek began creating strategies to help educators grow in their skillset of discussing race and identity in school. As Executive Director of Equity and School Climate In Minneapolis Public Schools, Derek implemented a comprehensive equity strategies including elementary school counseling positions, implementing the districts first Racial Harm Protocol, and created MPS Neighborhood virtual education programing.
Derek has delivered over 30 keynote presentations and sessions at school counselor and equity conferences including the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) and American Counseling Association.
Derek has recently produced Separate Not Equal - The Minnesota Integration Story which premiered this October at the 2024 Twin Cities Film Festival. Derek serves as the Culturally Responsive Instructional Lead for COMPASS/ Brightworks, a collaborative of Minnesota Department of Education and Professional Development Specialist for Hatching Results.
